Congratulations graduates of 2020 & 2021! This year was definitely an interesting one, and with persistence we made it to the finish line. Good luck on all your future endeavors! Finally, I would like to thank my parents for being my support system all these years, with their love I succeeded as a first generation college student. ¡Viva La Raza!

During this pandemic I have gained an even greater meaning of the word family and dedication. This pandemic has been a trial for everyone and it has been a test on how strong we can be as a nation and as a world of diversity. I have seen people of all races, ages, and backgrounds come to together to support one another. On a level that has never been seen before. I have seen people reaching out to others like they would their own family. Therefore the meaning of family is not only for those who are biologically related, but it is for everyone who has chosen to see others as their brother and sister. Dedication to education this last year has been challenging. Through the many changes in life, staying focused on the end goal (graduation) was tough but it also granted a safe place. Education is somewhere you can get away from the outside world and dive into something you love. After this is all said and done, I want to encourage everyone to continue to be family to everyone and provide help when needed. I want to encourage everyone to never give up on their dreams even when there is confusion in the world, and the unknowing of where life is taking us should be a motivator and not a scare tactic. Be strong and be brave! We made it!

My fellow students. It’s been an honor to engage with individuals who have outstanding ideas to accomplish their goals. What an incredible privilege it has been to work alongside you as you have realized your purpose in life and have achieved a positive outcome. As a second generational student, it’s been challenging but rewarding at the same time. In my wildest dreams, I never thought I could accomplish this.

Congratulations to everyone graduating! Like many first-generation students I know how meaningful and special it is to be the first person in my family to obtain a bachelor’s degree. I’ve witnessed my mother’s struggles as a single mom doing all she could so all I would worry about was doing well in school. Therefore, this accomplishment is my mother’s and mine. I am very thankful for all the support I obtained at UNM from TRIO programs and research programs because they made my college journey much more meaningful and prepared me for the next chapter in my life! Thank you!

I am thankful that I stayed home for University. I thought I knew the ins and outs of Albuquerque, but attending UNM showed me a world inside my own that I never knew existed. I have met life long friends and found a passion that will hopefully last a life time. I was able to do it all in the place I call home and there's a sense of pride in that.

‘Creativity takes courage.’ – Henri Matisse This statement has never been more true in the world of graduating artist. Once an artists sets foot into the “real world” - creativity comes at so much more of a price. But, once we realize that the world needs us, needs hope and inspiration. Our task as an artist doesn’t seem so daunting. Once we realize the power we hold to make dreams a reality, who can stop us.

Mi abuelo diría, “Dime con quién andas, y te diré quién eres”. Which is, tell me who you hang out with and I’ll tell you who you are. By surrounding myself with people that want to succeed, tienen ganas to follow their dreams, and be proud to be themselves has led me to become the person I am today. I’m grateful for this moment and will continue to work hard. To all the niños sí, puedes hacer lo que quieras en la vida.
