Counseling Internship Program

MHC offers a two-semester counseling internship (comprising 240 direct hours and 350 indirect hours) designed to equip graduate-level counseling students with: 1) comprehensive training in the treatment of complex trauma and suicide risk assessment, 2) multi-layered supervision that strengthens professional identity while developing trauma-informed, anti-oppressive approaches, and 3) experiential learning opportunities that cultivate competencies in multicultural counseling, social justice, advocacy, and bilingual/bicultural practice. Currently, MHC provides placements at the Women’s Resource Center, El Centro de la Raza, and the Accessibility Resource Center.

Intercultural Immersion Trip: MHC recognizes the significant gap in intercultural experiential learning within the mental health field. To address this, we offer an eight-day immersion trip to Central Mexico, designed to encourage students to reflect on their cultural self-awareness, cross-cultural skills, and cultural humility, while connecting these insights to their professional growth. Students will visit diverse settings in Mexico City and Puebla, engaging in discussions on diversity, equity, and accessibility from a non-U.S. perspective. They will also explore the historical, cultural, and sociopolitical contexts of mental health in Mexico, examining how these factors influence the understanding of mental health among Latinx communities and other populations.

How to Join: If you are a graduate-level counseling student interested in being a part of our team, please contact MHC’s Program Coordinator, Ivette Acevedo Weatherholtz (she/her/ella), directly at ivetteaw@unm.edu.
