FAFSA & UNM State Aid

To be considered for financial aid students must complete the FAFSA or State Aid Application every year
& are encouraged to complete them as soon as possible!

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • The FAFSA is the official form that students use to apply for financial aid to help pay for college through, federal grants, work-study, loans, & scholarships.
  • The information you provide on the FAFSA determines whether you qualify for need-based aid, non-need-based aid, or some combination of the two.
  • Students must apply & renew their FAFSA yearly starting Oct 1st!

UNM State Aid Application

  • At UNM, undocumented students, including DACA recipients, should fill out the State Aid Application to be considered for state & institutional funding.
Do not let your parents immigration status stop you from completing the FAFSA, Federal Aid is your right! Just follow the steps below:
    • Your parents will not be able to create an FSA ID and will not be able to sign the form electronically.
    • If your parents do not have a SSN they must enter 000-00-0000 for this portion of the form. Do not enter their ITIN if they have one.
    • When prompted for parent signatures, select the option to print the signature page and have one of your parents sign it.
    • Drop off the signature page at the UNM One Stop (Mesa Vista Hall, Room 1030). Avoid sending it to the address listed on the form as it will take longer to process.
  • In 2005 the State of New Mexico established a law referred to as SB-582. This law prohibits the denial of admission or eligibility for education benefits based on immigration status.
  • SB-582 allows in-state tuition rates & state funding such as the NM Lottery Scholarship for qualifying students.
