Ida Romero Memorial Scholarship

The Ida Romero Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of an extraordinary woman and contributor to the University of New Mexico. As a single mother, Ida Romero worked full-time and put herself through college at UNM. In 1985, Ida received her Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. Three years later, in 1988, she received her Master's degree in Education. Ida was very involved in the university and in the community. In 1995, Ida was appointed Director of UNM's Student Financial Aid Office. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and fought to beat it to the very end. Those who knew Ida were impressed with her strength, dedication, artistic ability, natural beauty and love for life. The Scholarship is made possible through the many contributions and efforts of those individuals touched by Ida Romero and/or her memory. This scholarship is administered by El Centro de la Raza, UNM Financial Aid Office, and the Ida Romero Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee. Ida Romero graciously contributed to the University of New Mexico and through this memorial scholarship she continues to do so.
